The program provides benefits as EBT cards to help low-income families buy groceries.

You are encouraged to complete the food stamp eligibility assessment. Answering the questions in the assessment will help you determine if you are eligible for other programs. However, you do not have to use the assessment tool to apply for food stamps in Iowa.
You will need to provide your name, address and signature as well information about your income and expenses. Once you submit your application a DHS worker will contact you for an interview to determine your eligibility. Interviews can be conducted in-person or on the telephone.
If you are approved to participate in the food stamp program you will receive an EBT card to purchase food to prepare at home.
If your household has monthly income of less than $150 and cash or bank accounts with less than $100 may be eligible for emergency food stamps within seven days of submitting the application.
